Just say for a moment that there is a person very educated, having been living in backwoods Burma for the past 30 years completing a study, no TV or radio, totally off the grid, and now is returning to society. With no political affiliation and unaware of current events, priority is reestablishing a life and becoming familiar with the new U.S. and the changes that have taken place since leaving 30 years prior.
This individual would look at the U.S., its values, and its political agendas with fear and disgust. Viewing all political parties and branches of government as corrupt and sorely mismanaged. As time began to pass it would become clear that this is not an issue limited to just the national level, yet it is evident corruption dominates our city, county, and state governments.
Between the petty party bashing and the visible intent of our governing bodies to put aside the best interest of the people in order to achieve financial and personal political power, our new arrival would quickly begin to realize the downward spiral the nation. Remembering a time when people took pride in their nation and in their actions, I wonder if our new neighbor would fall into depression, concede to become one of the growing herd, or shout to the heights of government that change must come.
Surely we all understand that our nation was founded by a people willing to die to escape the tyranny and control of a dictator and heavy handed government. Then too, shouldn’t we understand that we have allowed this corruption, this tyranny, and loss of liberty to slowly creep back into our nation and take its grip upon our leaders. By not standing true to the values of our founders and continuing our fight for liberty, by becoming complacent, and not putting forth energy in research when electing officials we have allowed this corruption to prevail. All the while we are protected by the Constitution as it gives us the right to remove these power mongers and hold them accountable.
So I ask, as I feel the returning citizen would ask, why have we laid down our values? Why have we given in to corruption and given up our power? Why do we no longer respect the sacrifices of our forefathers? Why do we dishonor those that bravely serve our nation by not fighting the good fight at home while they fight abroad? Why do we not take action? Why aren’t we shouting to the heavens that there must change? We hold the reins, is time to crack the whip, pull back on the reins and gather our team. It is time to take responsibility for our actions while holding ourselves to a higher standard and demanding the same of our leaders. In the end our government answers to us.
We the People of the United States of America hold the power of change and it is we that must make use of it!
