The day is nearing that Hillary announces her intention to become president and already the regrets are flying. It is up to all of us to assure that Hillary is never elected as President of the United Stated. Republicans are sure to make it an issue if Clinton runs in 2016. The selection of Clinton as the speaker at the three-day NADA conference, attended by more than 22,000 dealers, met vocal opposition. NADA, which declined to say how much she was paid for her appearance, said she was selected because she offered an important perspective. Dealers are a politically active group and tend to be conservative. They gave more than $16 million to political campaigns in 2012, 85 percent to Republicans, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. "Mrs. Clinton is a polarizing figure but that's OK," David Shepard, a NADA director and a dealer in Fort Scott, Kansas, said. He added that the selection was not a NADA endorsement of Clinton as a possible presidential candidate. I felt, as most Americans do, that my voice didn’t or wouldn’t matter. In my daily travels I engage Americans of all racial, cultural, religious, and financial backgrounds. Through our interaction I have become aware of just how lost and powerless most feel. I recognized that most Americans feel they have no voice or don’t understand how to express it. It too is sad in part because, in school, we were taught of the voice that we are all entitled, we were taught how to utilize it, we were taught of its value in creating change, and in the control of power. We have just forgotten.
Around two years ago I was reading a political article and there written before me, I realized, were the three most powerful words written in American History. As I read these three words and felt an awakening. These three words hold more than one can imagine. They offer us a forgotten power. Within them is held the entitlement of our voice. They provide us the opportunity, if utilized, to regain and maintain control of our nation. They allow us to cast out corruption. Those that came before us understood their meaning, the magic that could be found within, and the power that these three words possess. They honored these words so dearly that they were willing to lay down their lives in their defense. “We the People” The words “We the People” give us a voice. They put us first in the chain of power. They afford us the right to take action and bring about change. Yet, they do not come without a price nor does anything worth holding dear. The price to make use of these three great words is your willingness to do so. These three words entitle us the right to write our leaders and voice our opinions. Folks I don’t mean write a letter and consider it done, I mean hound them with hundreds. These three words give us the ability to shout out from the steps of city hall to those of our nation’s capital. They empower us to be part of the growth and development our communities. To become involved with issues within our city and state governments and be a part of governmental meetings. If we are willing to pay the price of our personal time and energy these three words will empower us to make a change, even on Capitol Hill. Our forefathers took great pride in the words “We the People” and put forth the effort to assure that they remained in place that we may understand their meaning and enjoy the liberties contained within. Now the torch has passed and before it is too late we must embrace the power, understand the true meaning, put forth the energy and effort, make use of, honor, and protect all that is granted to us through the words “We the People”. It is our obligation to assure the truths, value, and power held by these three words are protected for generations to come. Hillary Fired For “Lying, Unethical Behavior” on Watergate Committee By Robert Gehl on January 12, 2014 Hillary Clinton might have a pretty hefty scandal brewing. It turns when she was an attorney working on the Watergate investigation, she was fired by her supervisor for “lying, unethical behavior.” Jerry Zeifman, who said he is a lifelong Democrat, was a supervisor for 27-year-old Hillary Rodham on the committee. When the investigation was complete, Zeifman said he fired Hillary and refused to give her a recommendation. “Because she was a liar,” Zeifman said. “She was an unethical, dishonest lawyer. She conspired to violate the Constitution, the rules of the House, the rules of the committee and the rules of confidentiality. Dan Calabrese reports: How could a 27-year-old House staff member do all that? She couldn’t do it by herself, but Zeifman said she was one of several individuals – including Marshall, special counsel John Doar and senior associate special counsel (and future Clinton White House Counsel) Bernard Nussbaum – who engaged in a seemingly implausible scheme to deny Richard Nixon the right to counsel during the investigation. Why would they want to do that? Because, according to Zeifman, they feared putting Watergate break-in mastermind E. Howard Hunt on the stand to be cross-examined by counsel to the president. Hunt, Zeifman said, had the goods on nefarious activities in the Kennedy Administration that would have made Watergate look like a day at the beach – including Kennedy’s purported complicity in the attempted assassination of Fidel Castro. The actions of Hillary and her cohorts went directly against the judgment of top Democrats, up to and including then-House Majority Leader Tip O’Neill, that Nixon clearly had the right to counsel. Zeifman says that Hillary, along with Marshall, Nussbaum and Doar, was determined to gain enough votes on the Judiciary Committee to change House rules and deny counsel to Nixon. And in order to pull this off, Zeifman says Hillary wrote a fraudulent legal brief, and confiscated public documents to hide her deception. The brief involved precedent for representation by counsel during an impeachment proceeding. When Hillary endeavored to write a legal brief arguing there is no right to representation by counsel during an impeachment proceeding, Zeifman says, he told Hillary about the case of Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas, who faced an impeachment attempt in 1970. “As soon as the impeachment resolutions were introduced by (then-House Minority Leader Gerald) Ford, and they were referred to the House Judiciary Committee, the first thing Douglas did was hire himself a lawyer,” Zeifman said. The Judiciary Committee allowed Douglas to keep counsel, thus establishing the precedent. Zeifman says he told Hillary that all the documents establishing this fact were in the Judiciary Committee’s public files. So what did Hillary do? “Hillary then removed all the Douglas files to the offices where she was located, which at that time was secured and inaccessible to the public,” Zeifman said. Hillary then proceeded to write a legal brief arguing there was no precedent for the right to representation by counsel during an impeachment proceeding – as if the Douglas case had never occurred. The brief was so fraudulent and ridiculous, Zeifman believes Hillary would have been disbarred if she had submitted it to a judge. Zeifman says that if Hillary, Marshall, Nussbaum and Doar had succeeded, members of the House Judiciary Committee would have also been denied the right to cross-examine witnesses, and denied the opportunity to even participate in the drafting of articles of impeachment against Nixon. Of course, Nixon’s resignation rendered the entire issue moot, ending Hillary’s career on the Judiciary Committee staff in a most undistinguished manner. Zeifman says he was urged by top committee members to keep a diary of everything that was happening. He did so, and still has the diary if anyone wants to check the veracity of his story. Certainly, he could not have known in 1974 that diary entries about a young lawyer named Hillary Rodham would be of interest to anyone 34 years later. Each day that passes it becomes more evident of whom the 2016 Democratic nominee for President will be. So too, with each new day more news becomes available to collaborate the decision on this nominee and I become more fearful for my nation. I fear that pure ignorance and dependency upon government resources is going to transfer the power and leadership of our nation from liar to liar. Over the past two years it seems our daily news has been dominated by stories that have unfolded into great lies. Twists and turns on the truth have become common place. Out right refusal to answer for actions on decisions made is now expected and sadly the American public is not screaming in its loudest voice. I may be wrong but it appears that Hillary Clinton is going to be called to lead the Democratic Party and should this happen it will only show the world how weak and spineless the U.S. has truly become. We are already the laughing stock of the world and instead of the people standing up, putting their foot down, and demanding change we are probably going to see a shameless bitch like Hillary Clinton rise to power. Benghazi was horrifying and her actions deplorable yet that is just the tip of the iceberg. She has attacked our right to own a firearms only to gain political power among gun haters and to establish her strength within the United Nations. Whether she is a true believer in gun control we’ll never know. Hillary has tried to snag power within our government and the UN by setting forth into motion bills providing the UN power to dictate the educational processes in this country. Even worse she has made a strong push in presenting legislature that would give the UN power to dictate how a parent, in our country, would provide care for a child with a disability (the term disability was undefined and open for interpretation) and if the UN or its cronies decided that the parent did not act within the guidelines set by the UN they then have the power to step in and remove the child, without parental consent. Is this what it has truly come to? Are we, as a nation, willing to except this type of leadership? Only time will tell. It is within our power to make change, to demand that our leaders rise to higher standards, and the outcome will be determined by the effort we put forth. It is time to put aside party lines, to take hold of the power that our Constitution grants us replacing those unwilling to work in our best interest.
We once fled, fought, and died to free ourselves from tyrannical, monarchial, dictatorship and the corruption within the government of the time. Do not concede allowing our nation to digress into the form from which we once rose above. America once prospered while enjoying the sweet taste of Liberty and so it shall again if afforded by the efforts of her people. Last night I sat on the couch watching TV. It’s a typical Sunday evening so I flip through the channels and settle on 60 Minutes. The episode was a repeat of the 2012 follow up episode on the Lost Boys of Sudan. I have followed the episodes of the Lost Boys over the years so when seeing this was to be a segment of the show I stopped and watched. Sitting there on my couch in the comfort of my home and watching their story unfold before me, I will admit, I became a bit emotional. Why you may ask as this is just a story of some poor kids from the Sudan and the Sudan is a place not many care about anyway. Well it turned out to be much more. I found my heart touched in many ways. I was shocked by the plight and struggles that these children endured and how they carried on step after step as death knocked upon the door. I witnessed through their words the story of the tragedy that they witnessed firsthand while never losing faith and continuing to move forward in search of a better life. This made me think of the founding fathers of our nation and the families of common folks that chose to take the risk to fight for liberty understanding that if they did not succeed they too would surely face death at the hand of a tyrant. The Lost Boys that were fortunate enough to be allowed to come to America did so without hesitation as their heart yearned for freedom. They entered a new world eager to make a mark and reach for success. Having been stripped of everything except the fear of the unknown and their willingness to step forward they ventured into a new land. I saw pride within their eyes and understood the pride that those early settlers must have felt as they ventured into a new land. The Lost Boys went on with their lives becoming U.S. citizens, entering the work force or becoming students, and even serving in the U.S. Armed Forced. In today’s world it is hard to imagine the life and struggles of our forefathers hundreds of years ago so seeing the hunger for liberty in the eyes of these young men may be something that the people are able to relate to. I challenge you to watch part 1 and part 2 of the story of the lost boys and while doing so to think of the hopelessness from which they came and the pride that they found in Liberty. Just say for a moment that there is a person very educated, having been living in backwoods Burma for the past 30 years completing a study, no TV or radio, totally off the grid, and now is returning to society. With no political affiliation and unaware of current events, priority is reestablishing a life and becoming familiar with the new U.S. and the changes that have taken place since leaving 30 years prior.
This individual would look at the U.S., its values, and its political agendas with fear and disgust. Viewing all political parties and branches of government as corrupt and sorely mismanaged. As time began to pass it would become clear that this is not an issue limited to just the national level, yet it is evident corruption dominates our city, county, and state governments. Between the petty party bashing and the visible intent of our governing bodies to put aside the best interest of the people in order to achieve financial and personal political power, our new arrival would quickly begin to realize the downward spiral the nation. Remembering a time when people took pride in their nation and in their actions, I wonder if our new neighbor would fall into depression, concede to become one of the growing herd, or shout to the heights of government that change must come. Surely we all understand that our nation was founded by a people willing to die to escape the tyranny and control of a dictator and heavy handed government. Then too, shouldn’t we understand that we have allowed this corruption, this tyranny, and loss of liberty to slowly creep back into our nation and take its grip upon our leaders. By not standing true to the values of our founders and continuing our fight for liberty, by becoming complacent, and not putting forth energy in research when electing officials we have allowed this corruption to prevail. All the while we are protected by the Constitution as it gives us the right to remove these power mongers and hold them accountable. So I ask, as I feel the returning citizen would ask, why have we laid down our values? Why have we given in to corruption and given up our power? Why do we no longer respect the sacrifices of our forefathers? Why do we dishonor those that bravely serve our nation by not fighting the good fight at home while they fight abroad? Why do we not take action? Why aren’t we shouting to the heavens that there must change? We hold the reins, is time to crack the whip, pull back on the reins and gather our team. It is time to take responsibility for our actions while holding ourselves to a higher standard and demanding the same of our leaders. In the end our government answers to us. We the People of the United States of America hold the power of change and it is we that must make use of it! Just read a posting from a school mate expressing his frustration with being forced to stand in line at the grocer while watching the freebies handed out before him.
I went to Walmart a few days back to grab some items as I was on the way home from work. Turns out when I arrived the place is packed and people are everywhere. I make my way through the store and end up being the fifth person in my check-out line. I feel my school mate’s pain and frustration as the four customers in line ahead of me all paid with those government check things and of course each item is checked off with its corresponding item on the list. Ears turning red, food thawing out, and all the while I wait in line with my hard earned U.S. dollars in pocket as the four people ahead of me walk out with free product. Now I do understand that there are those in need and those that deserve assistance but with consistent hand-outs what generates the incentive to move beyond their situation. We have created a nation of dependency and taught this cycle to generations of recipients. Our government has recently prided itself on following a model of Europe and with the UK setting records of welfare recipients, 1 of every 8 households are on welfare, I guess I do see the similarity. This has become the new age slave master teaching most that receive benefits that receiving these benefits is better than working for them. The system is designed for short term assistance not lifelong or multigenerational payouts. I recently read an article where during the interview a welfare recipient ask the reporter “if someone were to offer you a million dollars and you had to do nothing for it, would you take it?”, she continued by stating, “the government offered it to me in monthly payments, rent supplement, and Medicaid, so I took it”. This is the beast that has been created. It may seem cruel to regulate or even cut these benefits but it has also been proven that when the benefits are cut or even discontinued the people find work. It has become far too easy to sit back, collect assistance, be picky, and say there are no jobs for me. Yet take away the assistance and any job begins to look good. Those that came before us worked. They did what was needed to provide. They struggled, gained character, showed grit, and our nation was prosperous. There is no declaration stating that each of us are to receive the perfect job. In fact, sometime you have to eat a little crap. But understand those are the times when we build upon ourselves, that we learn lessons, and receive the initiative to strive harder. I fear that we are at point in the life of our nation where the people have conceded allowing the government to dictate their lives and provided their livelihood. They have traded their liberty for slavery. PS: Those that receive and those that argue in their favor always refer to it a Government money, it is the PEOPLES money! The Imperial President: Obama Claims, ‘Where I Can Act on my Own Without Congress, I’m Going to do so.’ January 15, 2014 By Todd Cefaratti President Obama operates more and more as a king and less and less as an elected leader, accountable to the people.Speaking in North Carolina on Wednesday, Obama announced (again) that he would rule on his own if need be. Discussing the extension of unemployment benefits, Obama stated,“So Congress should do the right thing and extend this vital lifeline for millions of Americans. Of course, that’s just short term. Long-term, the challenge of making sure everybody who works hard can get ahead in today’s economy is so important that we can’t wait for Congress to solve it. Where I can act on my own without Congress, I’ m going to do so.”This is unsettling. More and more during his second term, the brash president has declared that he can operate without Congress on important issues.The president already signed 23 new, executive orders concerning gun control in the aftermath of the Sandy Hook Shooting. Late last year, he signed two more concerning information-sharing amongst federal agencies that violate current healthcare privacy laws.Obama has all but done away with deportations in clear violation of existing immigration laws and he refused to defend the federal Defense of Marriage Act to the Supreme Court.And, of course, the president continually tweaks and revises Obamacare, delaying mandates and unilaterally changing the law after it has been passed, despite him claiming that Obamacare is the settled “law of the land.”This is not the workings of a presidency, but of a dictatorship.Emperor Obama operates with both a Plan “A” and a “Plan B.” Obama Does Not Have The Constitutional Power To Run This Country Like A Dictator When the Fuhrer speaks you will listen. This seems to be the attitude of the U.S. Fuhrer, Obama, if judged by his recent comments (article to follow). I agree that there should be change with many of our policies, protocols, and some of the existing bills, however, Obama seems to have made it clear that he is planning to move forward with his agenda whether congress or the people agree. It has been my understanding that there are processes in place to protect the interest of the American people (even from our own government) assuring that decisions are made by majority vote so no one individual has full or total power. This in turn eliminates the possibility of a dictatorship. Over the past two terms the Fuhrer has made it very clear that he will take whatever steps necessary to implement his agenda as he feels fit or as he determines is in the best interest of the people, now as in the past it seems to be his intent to force his ideas and his agenda upon our nation with disregard for the people and only to achieve his personal mission.
Many of you may disagree with my referring to Obama as the Fuhrer so keep in mind that this is my opinion and unlike our leader I am not trying to force my beliefs upon you, I only offer my opinion so that you may choose to make use of it or not when forming your own. I fear that our once great nation has become a people dependent upon the government rather than on our own ability to thrive. We have become a nation that looks to our government for answers, for guidance, for financial security, when we once were a nation resourceful and proud, not afraid to stand on our own two feet and face adversity with grit, willing to dig deep within ourselves to find success. In my daily travels I encounter the people of our nation in many social and economic situations, I associate with people from a variety of racial, cultural, and religious backgrounds and in all, no matter their financial status or lifestyle, there is a growing trend to rely upon the government rather than themselves. I fear it is through this change of thought our nation is becoming more willing to receive a dictator that will provide a voice, guidance, and instruction even if it is truly not in our best interest. We have forgotten that within each of us are the resources needed for success. The course of life was not intended to be easy or handed to us upon a platter, for it is through our challenges, through our suffering, that we learn the true meaning of success and gain the vision to reach for it on our own. Don’t allow our leaders to take upon themselves the power that belongs to the people. Refuse to allow them to dictate what is best for you and how you shall live your life. For if we continue to allow their control we will transform from a great nation of people bound by liberty only to become a government commodity. Obama: Won't wait for legislation to advance 2014 priorities By Jeff Mason WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama said on Tuesday he would not wait for Congress to pass legislation to advance his policy priorities this year and said he was "getting close" to finishing a review of U.S. surveillance practices - to be unveiled on Friday. Obama, speaking to reporters during a cabinet meeting at the White House, foreshadowed his upcoming State of the Union address and what appeared to be a new messaging strategy by emphasizing his ability to take executive actions without approval from lawmakers. "We are not just going to be waiting for legislation in order to make sure that we're providing Americans the kind of help that they need," he said. "I've got a pen, and I've got a phone. And I can use that pen to sign executive orders and take executive actions ... and I've got a phone that allows me to convene Americans from every walk of life," he said. Obama began last year with high hopes of making progress on gun control, immigration reform, and other issues after giving an inaugural address that rallied his base and set an aggressive tone for his second term. But the year concluded with few legislative achievements. His gun control efforts largely failed and an immigration reform bill passed in the Senate but stalled in the House of Representatives. White House officials, while referring to 2014 as a "year of action," have already played down the prospect of getting a lot of laws passed and told reporters that they would not measure the year's success by the administration's list of legislative victories. Obama again listed immigration reform as a priority for the year. He will need Congress to turn his goals on that issue into law. The president also emphasized his goal of getting the U.S. economy to recover faster. "The message to my cabinet - and that will be amplified in our State of the Union - is that we need all hands on deck to build on the recovery that we're already seeing. The economy is improving, but it could be improving even faster," Obama said. "And I am absolutely confident that in 2014, if we're all working in the same direction and not worrying so much about political points but worrying much more about getting the job done, that we can see a lot of improvement this year," he said. Republican speaker of the House John Boehner, whose support Obama will need for the administration's legislative priorities, said the president had lost focus on the economy. "If the president's serious about wanting to improve the prospects for our economy - and higher wages and better jobs - all he has to do is pick up the phone and call Democrat leaders in the Senate and ask them to move one of these dozens of bills that we've sent over there that would help put Americans back to work," Boehner said. On a separate issue, Obama is scheduled to make a speech on Friday outlining his decisions on how to reform controversial surveillance activities by the National Security Agency that were made public through revelations by former U.S. contractor Edward Snowden. The White House’s detractors and much of the Beltway media was quite certain the story was Watergate, Iran-Contra, Teapot Dome, Abscam, all rolled into one mega-scandal. And then it all collapsed. The tax agency didn’t single out conservatives for unfair scrutiny; there was no conspiracy; and the news organizations that were obsessed with the story when it looked bad completely lost interest when it looked meaningless. The smoking gun was a water pistol, and the political world moved on past the discredited allegations. All the while, lingering in the background, was an FBI probe, with federal law enforcement investigating to determine if any laws were broken. Care to guess how that turned out?F.B.I. investigators do not believe Internal Revenue Service officials committed crimes in the unusually heavy scrutiny of conservative groups that applied for tax-exempt status, a law enforcement official said Monday. Prosecutors for the Justice Department who have been overseeing the case have not made a decision about whether to file charges against the officials – although that would seem unlikely given the F.B.I. investigators’ conclusion, according to the official, speaking anonymously because he could not talk on the record about a continuing investigation.The IRS faux-scandal, which has died with a whimper, is actually in the news quite a bit right now for a couple of reasons. The first is the Republicans preoccupation with comparing President Obama’s handling of the IRS story with Gov. Chris Christie’s (R) handling of his bridge scandal. But as the FBI’s disinterest helps remind us, there is no equivalence here – the Christie administration, as the governor himself now admits, engaged in actual misconduct. The IRS story, on the other hand, is a mirage. And then there’s House Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell Issa (R-Calif.). The far-right congressman will likely have to give up his committee gavel at the end of this year, so whatever witch hunts he intends to pursue while he still has power will have to come quickly. Issa seems well aware of the ticking clock.Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) in 2014 will pursue the IRS scandal, the deadly Benghazi attack and the botched Fast and Furious operation in what will likely be his last year as the House GOP’s chief investigator.By all appearance, Issa is making an awkward transition from a powerful committee chairman into a tragic caricature of himself. Watching him jump up and down, vowing to use his final year as Oversight Committee chairman to beat dead horses, I’m reminded of Mortimer Duke towards the end of “Trading Places,” throwing a tantrum: “Now, you listen to me! I want trading reopened right now. Get those brokers back in here! Turn those machines back on!” Watching a defeated man in a deep sense of denial is amusing when portrayed by Don Amache. But at the time, Jesse didn't think he was much of a person. His father was a brute of a man. His dad was actually thought to be mentally ill And treated Jesse rough all of his life. Jesse's older brother wasn't much better. He was always picking on Jesse and beating him up. Yes, Jesse grew up in a very rough home in West Virginia. Life was anything but easy. And he thought life didn't hold much hope for him. That's why he was standing in this chicken line, Doing a job that darn few people wanted. In addition to all the rough treatment at home, it seems That Jesse was always sick. Sometimes it was real physical illness, but way too often it was all in his head. He was a small child, skinny and meek. That sure didn't help the situation any. When he started to school, he was the object of every Bully on the playground. He was a hypochondriac of the first order. For Jesse, tomorrow was not always something he Looked forward to. But, he had dreams. He wanted to be a ventriloquist. He found books on ventriloquism. He practiced with Sock puppets and saved his hard earned dollars until He could get a real ventriloquist dummy. When he got old enough, he joined the military. And even though many of his hypochondriac symptoms Persisted, the military did recognize his talents and Put him in the entertainment corp. That was when his world changed. He gained confidence. He found that he had a talent for making people laugh, And laugh so hard they often had tears in their eyes. Yes, little Jesse had found himself. You know, folks, the history books are full of people Who overcame a handicap to go on and make a success Of themselves, but Jesse is one of the few I know of Who didn't overcome it. We have been informed that the location of our cell phones can be tracked and now are told the camera and audio may be turned on remotely by the NSA. Our voice of frustration has reached the President and we are told that the searches are legal and the invasion of our privacy is legal. The government listening to a romantic phone call is a legal search, tracking your internet activities or transmissions is a legal search, the ability to engage your personal cellphone camera and enter your private world is a legal search. All of which is being done whether you are suspected of a crime or not and the government says it’s all legal. Yet, U.S. District Judge Mary Scriven, on Tuesday, struck down a Florida law requiring drug screening for welfare recipients, saying that it violated the constitutional protection against unreasonable searches. I find this to be a bit hypocritical. On one hand the government allows our personal world to be invaded, monitored, or tracked stating it does not violate the constitutional laws governing searches and on the other hand the government says drug screening for welfare recipients violated the constitutional protection against unreasonable searches. It would seem that the U.S. Government's right and left hand don’t communicate on the same constitutional law or as in so many other cases they just want the cake and to eat it too. Judge strikes down Florida law mandating drug tests for welfareReuters – Tue, Dec 31, 2013 (Reuters) - A U.S. judge on Tuesday struck down a Florida law requiring drug screening for welfare recipients, saying that it violated the constitutional protection against unreasonable searches. Florida Governor Rick Scott, a Republican who campaigned on a promise to expand drug testing, said he would appeal the ruling. The law took effect in July 2011 and required parents to undergo and pay for urine tests for illegal drugs when they applied for Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, a federal-state program that helps poor people with children pay for food, shelter and necessities. The testing fee of $25 to $45 was to be repaid by the state if the test came back negative, but applicants who tested positive would have been barred from receiving benefits for a year. Enforcement of the law was temporarily halted in October 2011 after the American Civil Liberties Union sued, arguing that mandatory testing of people who were not suspected of using drugs violated the constitutional prohibition against unreasonable searches and seizures. U.S. District Judge Mary Scriven permanently halted enforcement of the law in Tuesday's ruling. She agreed with an earlier court finding that "there is nothing inherent in the condition of being impoverished that supports the conclusion that there is a concrete danger that impoverished individuals are prone to drug use...." The lawsuit was filed in U.S. District Court in Orlando on behalf of Luis Lebron, a U.S. Navy veteran, college student and single father with sole custody of his then-5-year-old son. Lebron was denied benefits when he refused to take the test. "The new law assumes that everyone who needs a little help has a drug problem," Lebron said when the suit was filed in 2011. "It's wrong and unfair. It judges a whole group of people on their temporary economic situation." Scott and other supporters of the law argued that welfare recipients needed to be drug-free to prepare them for jobs. They said businesses had been requiring such tests for years and that government should do the same to ensure that taxpayer money wasn't used to buy illegal drugs. "Any illegal drug use in a family is harmful and even abusive to a child," Scott said on Tuesday. "We should have a zero tolerance policy for illegal drug use in families - especially those families who struggle to make ends meet and need welfare assistance to provide for their children." During the time the law was in effect, about 2.6 percent of recipients tested positive for illegal drugs, mostly for marijuana, according to the court documents. The failure rate was well below that of the general population. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services found in a 2009 survey that about 8.7 percent of the population aged 12 or older had used illicit drugs in the previous month. Generally, the courts have allowed suspicionless drug testing only when public safety is at risk, such as for armed officers or railroad workers who operate heavy equipment.
